Representative Arthur L. Bates told Robert E. Peary he was going to write Theodore Roosevelt about congressional recognition for Peary’s discovery of the North Pole. Bates suggested Peary write Roosevelt since he referenced him in his eulogy of aviator Arch Hoxsey.
