John Callan O’Laughlin provides President Roosevelt with an update on how he believes things stand regarding the Republican candidates for president for the 1908 election. He believes that Secretary of War William H. Taft is the choice of eastern Republicans–buoyed largely because of Roosevelt’s support–but provides a state-by-state breakdown of popular and governmental sentiment.
