Comments and Context

The typically reserved and artistically accomplished Luther Daniels Bradley joined his fellow cartoonists in imagining scenarios inherent in Theodore Roosevelt’s upcoming African safari.

He did not succumb to the common temptations of depicting wild animals in retreat before the strenuous Teddy; not antics of stereotypical wild natives. Rather, his cartoon originally published in the Chicago Daily News pictured barely stereotyped natives compliantly whitewashing a rhino after the president stated his intention to procure a specimen for an American museum.
