Comments and Context
This cartoon by Arthur L. Bowen suffers the fate of many a drawing by an artist one step above amateur status, and commentators of modest powers. It appears to commend President Roosevelt, but at the same time seems to suggest that he molded, more than earned, his image.
There were few cities that had more active journalistic activities, and more newspapers, than did Chicago through the years. The Chicago Journal was never the circulation leader in the city’s crowded field but it frequently led with talent since its founding in 1844. At the time of this cartoon, the famous Finley Peter Dunne was Editor, and it was in Journal‘s pages that he created the iconic political commentator, the humorous Irishman Mr. Dooley. Dunne also discovered the popular epigrammist Bert Leston Taylor, who found greatest fame after the city’s Tribune hired him away.
