William H. Taft sits on a hammock with the “G.O.P.” elephant, wooing her with a box of “Ohio Bonbons.”
Comments and Context
Once again a Puck cartoonist, presumably on a slow news day during summer holidays, resorted to depicting the presumptive Republican presidential nominee (a year in the future), mostly to have fun at his expanse.
L. M. Glackens made no salient political point in this cartoon, except perhaps that William H. Taft, from Cincinnati, might be counted on to deliver Ohio to the Republican victory in 1908, as a favorite son. Ohio, however, in those years was reliably Republican — presidents Grant, Hayes, Garfield, and McKinley, just since the Civil War — were Ohioans.
Cartoonists need recreation, too, in summer months, and this cartoon was surely just an opportunity to indulge in caricatural hyperbole.
