Comments and Context

The Maypole in cartoonist Ehrhart’s drawing is the seasonal theme of every Spring commemoration number of Puck: not May 1’s May Day, the international workers holiday, but the things of spring.

As nature opens up, so too do new pursuits, new household budgets, new fashions to buy and new bills for paterfamilias to pay. The professions of friends and family, tying Father up, give a glimpse of the workaday jobs of average American in 1905.
