Neither Theodore Roosevelt nor his secretary received any requests from the correspondents of the Chicago Tribune for the letter Roosevelt wrote to Juliet Barrett Rublee. John Callan O’Laughlin was given permission to publish the letter in the Chicago Herald but it was not meant to be an exclusive. Roosevelt regrets that Joseph Medill Patterson was “scooped” on the letter but neither believed the letter would be considered important. Patterson’s New York correspondent should call Oyster Bay, New York, when information from Roosevelt is desired.
