President Roosevelt returns the picture to art dealer William H. Veerhoff. While he likes it and would purchase it if possible, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt finds “the subject too painful a one.” Roosevelt previously saw a draft or reproduction of the picture and believes the figures’ arrangement differed.
