President Roosevelt cannot believe the “catastrophe,” referring to the explosion on the USS Missouri, and sends his sympathies to Captain Cowles and all his officers and men. The last telegram from Admiral Albert Smith Barker made Roosevelt feel “pride even over sorrow.”
