Gifford Pinchot has been “more than doubtful” about Theodore Roosevelt’s attacks on the Non-Partisan League because the attacks “play into the hands of a very restricted number of business interests” and will “cost the Republican Party very many thousands of votes in important States.” Roosevelt is being advised on this issue by F. R. Stevens, a former lobbyist for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Pinchot believes that Stevens is not an effective advocate for farmers, that he has a “big business point of view.” Pinchot also encloses a copy of his statement on President Woodrow Wilson’s “first answer to the German peace move.”
