Booth Tarkington sent William Allen White a letter recommending a male relative for a district judgeship in Indiana. He requested that White forward the letter to President Roosevelt. White was confused by the request and refused. He believed he returned the letter but it was never received, and since then he has received an “embarrassing telegram,” which he encloses for the President. White hopes this letter fulfills Tarkington’s request.

William Allen White thanks President Roosevelt for introducing him to several different politicians, particularly Joe Harris. White states Harris is a good man, but is fixated on Mr. Kerns and his belief that his friend, William Warner, is now working with Kerns. White complains that Senator Hanna has treated Missouri like a southern state which is preventing the Republican Party from winning in Missouri. He suggests that local control of federal patronage should be established.

William Allen White cautions against the publication of a biography of President Roosevelt as Roosevelt’s “life is only beginning.” He suggests that if Roosevelt is the 1904 Republican presidential candidate a biography could be fuller and more valuable. White spoke with Cyrus Leland regarding the potential charges against Leland. He was pleased that Leland is comfortable standing by his record.

William Allen White writes to President Roosevelt and argues that if Cyrus Leland cannot convince the average American that the charges against him are false then he should not be appointed. In a postscript, White clarifies that Leland is a “clean man” and good citizen that has the support of White and his wife, Sallie White.
