Booker T. Washington understands why Theodore Roosevelt cannot attend the Tuskegee Board of Trustees meeting but is pleased to announce that Julius Rosenwald of Sears, Roebuck and Company has agreed to join the Board. Washington felt that it was his duty to press charges in the Ulrich assault case even though he doubted there would ever be a conviction. Almost all evidence presented in Henry Albert Ulrich’s defense has been “pure fabrication.”

Letter from Booker T. Washington to Theodore Roosevelt

President Roosevelt sent Booker T. Washington a draft of his letter to the Interstate Commerce Commission, which Washington now returns with some suggestions. He would like Roosevelt to emphasize that he wants the same justice done regarding humans as to freight. Roosevelt writes that several roads in the South do right by African Americans, but Washington would like him to work the sentence into the letter in such a way that newspapers cannot cut it out.

Letter from Booker T. Washington to William Loeb

Booker T. Washington waited several days before responding to William Loeb because he wanted to study the situation. The question that is troubling him regards Charles H. Scott and his dislike of Frank H. Hitchcock. It is important to have his vote and influence in the National Committee, but Washington suspects that Scott will try to act against Hitchcock and thereby against Secretary of War William H. Taft’s candidacy.
