African Safari (March 1909-1910)
This excerpt from a biography of Captain Francis Warrington Dawson published in pamphlet form in 1877 focuses on Dawson’s actions during the municipal elections in Charleston, South Carolina in 1868. Dawson’s attempt to unite with African American men and put them on the ticket failed. He was able to bring Democrats and African American men together for the first political meeting between the two groups. Dawson had great concern for the welfare and prosperity of the freed persons at the time.

The author lists Roosevelt’s fearlessness, loyalty, and patriotism among other personal qualities. Deeds such as securing the Panama Canal, improving the Army and Navy, and his work for the workingman are also included.

Senator Robert M. La Follette will be leaving Washington soon to campaign aggressively in Ohio, William H. Taft’s home state. Public opinion has changed, indicating La Follette is not in the running for the nomination, instead Theodore Roosevelt and Taft will be the ones to fight to lead the Republican Party.

After having lunch with Theodore Roosevelt, Frank Knox gives an official statement that Roosevelt is not and will not run for the nomination to become a candidate for president. Many Republicans hope Taft will turn down the nomination so Roosevelt might step up and save Republicans by becoming the Republican presidential candidate.

The reviewer of Donald R. Richberg’s book, The Shadow Men, writes it is a powerful story written by someone with a thorough knowledge of business and politics. The main character, John Byford, speaks of his experience as a secretary who becomes the scapegoat for the director’s misdeeds. Byford eventually realizes the men in power are not smart, they just know all the tricks and rules their opponents don’t know.
