His battle-ground

William E. Chandler, former Secretary of the Navy under President Arthur, salutes from a trap door in the floor where he is hiding. Red-stained papers labeled “Plan of Campaign Against England” by “W. E. Chandler Jingo-in-Chief” are on the floor, and bombs are exploding outside the door to the room. Portraits of John Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant hang on the wall in the background. Under Grant’s portrait, the text “Let Us Have Peace” has been crossed out. A much larger portrait of “W. E. Chandler Painted by Himself” and labeled “Ex-Secretary of United States Navy – Before the War” hangs next to the others. Also hanging on the wall is a “Proclamation Against England – No. 999” labeled in red “War.” Caption: Where our bloodthirstiest Jingo will be found when a real war comes.

The same old thing

At top, a laborer daydreams he has the ears of a mule and carries a banner that states, “Strike! No Surrender! Down with Capital!” He is being led over barricades by a “Walking Delegate” who gestures toward a laborer standing with one foot on a prostrate industrialist. At the bottom is depicted the reality of an unemployed laborer’s waking life of familial discord, though he still has the ears of a mule. Caption: Same old day-dream. Same old awakening.

“Let us have peace”

President Grover Cleveland and British Prime Minister Robert Cecil, Lord Salisbury, are dressed as Native Americans, smoking peace pipes filled with “Common Sense Tobacco.” Sitting with Cleveland, also dressed as natives, are Richard Olney, Robert R. Hitt, Charles A. Boutelle, Nelson Dingley, George Frisbie Hoar, William E. Chandler, John T. Morgan, and Henry Cabot Lodge. Sitting with Salisbury are Joseph Chamberlain, Arthur James Balfour, George Joachim Goschen, and the Duke of Devonshire, Spencer Compton Cavendish. In the foreground is a hatchet in a hole, to be buried, possibly over the Venezuela boundary dispute.

“Independence Day” of the future

“Independence Day” of the future

A future Fourth of July celebration is depicted where women have gained suffrage and equality. Young and old women ring a bell labeled “Equal Rights.” A notice on the bell tower states “Strike Out the Word Male.” Women emerge from underground and participate in a procession, marching under banners that state “United Order of Matinee Women” and “Higher Culture Division.” The procession passes two statues, one of a woman holding a rolling pin labeled “Erected to the Memory of the First Woman Who Wore Breeches” and the second of an eagle wearing a bonnet, labeled “The American Bird is a Hen Eagle and Lays Eggs. [?] Blake Sculp.”

The only thing that would scare our thick-skinned senators

The U.S. Senate chamber is reduced to pandemonium when a Senate Page announces the unexpected arrival of “Investigators Lexow and Goff.” Among the senators scrambling for cover are Arthur P. Gorman, Matthew S. Quay, Calvin S. Brice, Edward Murphy Jr., and George F. Hoar. Caption: The awful scene that would ensue if investigators Lexow and Goff should unexpectedly appear in the U.S. Senate chambers.
