Letter from F. W. Taussig to Theodore Roosevelt

F. W. Taussig, professor of economics at Harvard, asks President Roosevelt to procure botany specimens during his upcoming African safari on behalf of fellow professor, Roland Thaxter. Taussig tells Roosevelt that any member of the expedition can take the samples for Thaxter, who would provide vials. Taussig assures Roosevelt that he can reject the request as Thaxter does not know about his letter, acknowledging many similar requests are probably weighing on Roosevelt.

Letter from F. W. Taussig to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from F. W. Taussig to Theodore Roosevelt

F. W. Taussig, a professor of economics at Harvard University, tells President Roosevelt that he disagrees with the view that the economic depression was caused by the government’s policy regarding the railroads. Taussig argues that speculation is a healthy sign for the economy and that the high rates on loans, which is chiefly responsible for slowing the growth of the railroads, are common at the end of a period of rising prices. Taussig assures Roosevelt of his support for the administration’s policies.
