Norman Vincent Peale and the Religion of Service

P. James Roosevelt discusses the ministerial work of Reverend Norman Vincent Peale and his wife Ruth Stafford Peale. Roosevelt notes that Reverend Peale is the first minister to be awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal. Roosevelt highlights the four churches which Peale has served as minister and cites statistics about his Foundation For Christian Living and his magazine Guideposts. Roosevelt concludes by quoting four passages each from Peale and Theodore Roosevelt and noting that each used a bully pulpit to preach much the same message.

“The Old Fighting Man Home from the Wars” Archibald B. Roosevelt, A Biographical Tribute

Obituary of Archibald B. Roosevelt, son of Theodore Roosevelt, written by his cousin P. James Roosevelt. He discusses Archibald’s childhood antics in the White House with his brother Quentin and his education at various schools. He details his service in both world wars and how he earned his military decorations, and he examines Archibald’s career in finance in New York and Florida and discusses his charitable and volunteer work, especially in conservation, most notably with the Boone & Crockett Club. The obituary includes a poem written by Archibald, “Canada Geese.”

Four photographs of Archibald Roosevelt accompany the obituary: one shows him as a young man; another shows him and his brother Quentin training for service in World War I; another shows him and his wife Grace Stackpole Lockwood Roosevelt on horseback; and the last one shows him holding one of his father’s hunting rifles.

Citation for the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal awarded to Ethel Roosevelt Derby, eldest daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, in October 1977 by P. James Roosevelt. The citation recognizes her service as a nurse in World War I, her role as a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History, and her work on behalf of various causes in Oyster Bay, New York. The citation strives to give a sense of Mrs. Derby’s personality and how she employed it in service of preserving the memory of her father, President Roosevelt.

Written in response to the debate and controversy surrounding the negotiation of treaties with Panama regarding the United States’ control and defense of the Panama Canal Zone in 1977, P. James Roosevelt, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), writes that most of the stories dealing with the history of the Canal “contain basic errors of fact,” and he offers the services of the TRA to help those writing about the topic. The statement quotes Theodore Roosevelt on the future of Panama.

James Roosevelt, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provides a detailed look at the activities of the TRA during 1974, noting the significant financial donations the TRA made to various entities such as the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, the Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay, New York where Theodore Roosevelt is buried, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He highlights the hiring of John A. Gable to serve as the Executive Director of the TRA. Several of the initiatives noted here are described in some detail in brief notices in the rest of the issue.
