The Roosevelt Study Center: A quarter-century of excellence

Genna Rollins, Secretary of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), highlights the ceremonies and speeches that marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Roosevelt Study Center (RSC) in Zeeland, the Netherlands, on September 19, 2011. Rollins notes the various speakers from the United States and Holland, and she briefly summarizes their remarks. Rollins also provides a history of the RSC, with an emphasis on its relationship with the TRA, which included funding, donations of books and materials, and providing speakers such as John A. Gable, longtime executive director of the TRA. In one of her endnotes, Rollins examines the history of the Roosevelt family in the United States, noting the the two branches headquartered in Oyster Bay and Hyde Park, New York.

Rollins emphasizes the service of the Roosevelt brothers, noting Lieutenant Roosevelt’s brief tour as a combat pilot and Brigadier General Roosevelt’s steady leadership on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. Rollins concludes her article with brief stories of other notable Americans who served in World War I.

Rollins notes the reasons behind the cruise, lists some of its port calls, and highlights the importance of the cruise to the United States’ relations with Japan. Rollins also gives notices about a number of events and museum exhibits planned to commemorate the sailing of the fleet, which includes a lecture and exhibits and programs at four museums, including one in Australia.

Genna Rollins describes the ceremonies surrounding the conferring of the 2004 Theodore Roosevelt Police Award for the Washington, D.C., area to Detective Kyle Olinger of the Montgomery County, Maryland, Police Department. Rollins describes the shooting, subsequent paralysis, and eventual return to duty of Olinger. Rollins highlights some of the speakers and dignitaries present at the ceremony. A photograph of Olinger appears at the center of the article.
