Theodore Roosevelt and the Navy

Edward Renehan examines Theodore Roosevelt’s lifelong interest in naval affairs: naval history, strategy, and the building and deploying of a naval fleet. Renehan highlights the exploits of Roosevelt’s uncles, James Dunwoody Bulloch and Irvine S. Bulloch, and the work of Alfred Thayer Mahan as influencing Roosevelt’s views. Renehan also notes the importance of Roosevelt’s history, The Naval War of 1812, his tenure as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and his construction of battleships while president.

Two photographs, one of Roosevelt’s flag as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, and the other of Renehan with Alexandra Roosevelt Dworkin, supplement the text.

A brief history of the Theodore Roosevelt Association

A brief history of the Theodore Roosevelt Association

Edward Renehan provides a brief history of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), noting its origins in the immediate days after Theodore Roosevelt’s death in 1919. Renehan notes the work of the TRA’s predecessor, the Roosevelt Memorial Association and its sister organization, the Women’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association, in preserving and restoring historic sites related to Roosevelt’s life, and he highlights the TRA’s work with the National Park Service, Harvard University, and the American Museum of Natural History. Renehan also discusses the TRA’s work in publishing and charitable causes, such as its Teddy Bears for Kids program. A photograph of Roosevelt with his daughter, Ethel Roosevelt Derby, accompanies the article.

Book Reviews

Edward Renehan praises John A. Corry’s A Rough Ride to Albany: Teddy Runs for Governor because it illuminates one of the few episodes in Theodore Roosevelt’s life that has not been thoroughly studied. Renehan touches on some of the key players in New York state politics and notes that Roosevelt, despite his recently won fame as a Rough Rider, barely prevailed in the 1898 contest. A photograph of Roosevelt speaking from a flag-draped platform appears in the review.
