Ambassador Reid had received earlier reports of Royal Cortissoz’s health, but Corrinne Roosevelt Robinson’s letter persuaded him to request Cortissoz be discharged from official duties for three months. He appreciates Theodore Roosevelt’s letter. Reid recently used Roosevelt’s Winning of the West in a speech. He hopes Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt is recovering.

Ambassador Reid discusses his toast at a Fourth of July banquet hosted by the American Society of London, which newspapers are saying contained a “slight dig” at Theodore Roosevelt. Reid quotes the paragraph in question, in which he praised John Hays Hammond, the special ambassador for the coronation. The American Society of London publishes its own pamphlet of the speeches that were given and Reid will send Roosevelt a copy when it is published.

Letter from Whitelaw Reid to Theodore Roosevelt

Whitelaw Reid leaves a note for Theodore Roosevelt regarding a proposed series of articles on European politics. The newspaper he presented the idea to felt that they could not justify the price, but suggested that a magazine might be interested. Reid was glad to have seen Roosevelt’s son and daughter-in-law, Theodore Roosevelt and Eleanor Butler Roosevelt, recently, and hopes that Roosevelt’s son Archibald Roosevelt is doing well also. He provides some details about his own family, and wishes Roosevelt well.
