Stephen Tyng Mather, Director of the National Parks Service, responds to Madison Grant’s inquiry regarding whether there had ever been attempt to establish a national park on Washington state’s Olympic peninsula. Mather reviews the history of the establishment of a National Monument, the proposed bills that would previously have established a National Park, as well as some of the present difficulties surrounding the establishment of such a park.

Letter from Stephen Tyng Mather to Lewis Carrigan

National Park Service Director Mather thanks Lewis Carrigan, Secretary-Manager of the Northern California Counties Association, for his letter reporting the attitude of his organization regarding the Lassen Volcanic National Park. Mather explains that due to a lack of funding the Forest Service has been managing the park lands thus far, but mentions that the National Park Service has requested an appropriation of $5,000 for the park for the coming year. Mather is sure Lassen Volcanic National Park will be a compliment to other parks in the area, and is glad to hear about the support for the park that Carrigan reports.

Letter from Stephen Tyng Mather to Medford R. Arnold

National Park Service Director Mather acknowledges receipt of the resolution passed by the Susanville Chamber of Commerce opposing the return of the Lassen Volcanic National Park to the Forest Reserve. He tells Medford R. Arnold, secretary of the body, that he is hopeful that Congress will appropriate money to allow for work to begin on the park during the next fiscal year.

Letter from Stephen Tyng Mather to Roscoe J. Anderson

Assistant Secretary of the Interior Mather confirms receipt of the letter from Roscoe J. Anderson, Secretary-Manager of the Northern California Counties Association, enclosing a resolution of his organization. Mather informs Anderson that the Department of the Interior has considered the measure, and made a favorable report regarding the bill submitted by the chairman of the House Committee on Public Lands.

Telegram from Stephen Tyng Mather to Horace M. Albright

Assistant Secretary of the Interior Mather informs Horace M. Albright that he has heard that the bill about Lassen Volcanic National Park has passed the Senate. He instructs Albright to try to have President Woodrow Wilson’s signature withheld because of the various special exceptions present in the bill.

Letter from Stephen Tyng Mather to Alexander J. Forbes

Director of the National Park Service Mather regrets that the service is not currently in a position to do much with Lassen Volcanic National Park because no appropriations for funding have been made for it. He hopes that Congress will appropriate funds for the park after the war, which will allow for development of the area.

Letter from Stephen Tyng Mather to the Juniper Lake Resort Company

In reply to a request for information on what improvements the National Park Service plans to make in Lassen Volcanic National Park, Director of the National Park Service Mather reports that unless the recommended $5,000 appropriation is included in the civil bill considered by Congress, it will be impossible for the service to make any improvements to the reservation during the next fiscal year. Mather notes “with interest” that the road from Chester, California, to Juniper Lake has been completed, and hopes that the Juniper Lake Resort Company’s plans for further improvements are successful.

Letter from Stephen Tyng Mather to John Edward Raker

Director of the National Park Service Mather would be glad to take Representative Raker’s suggestion to meet with Arthur L. Conard regarding Lassen Volcanic National Park when he is next in California. He is not sure, however, if this will be as soon as October, as there is pressing national park business that will keep him in Washington for the present.
