Letter from Nicholas Longworth to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Nicholas Longworth to Theodore Roosevelt

Representative Longworth advises President Roosevelt of the political situation in Cincinnati, Ohio. Roosevelt is more favored than Senator Foraker, but it remains to be seen whether this sentiment can be directed successfully toward nominating Secretary of War Taft for president in 1908. Many Republicans who lost their positions in the election of 1906 place much of the blame on a speech Taft gave at Akron. Longworth believes the attempts of Taft’s brother, Charles, to force a quick resolution of the issue are unwise.

Letter from Nicholas Longworth to Theodore Roosevelt

Nicholas Longworth, on behalf of August Peabody Gardner, “Gus,” writes to Theodore Roosevelt on a matter Roosevelt and Gardner previously discussed in Oyster Bay, New York. Roosevelt promised to testifying before the Steel Corporation Investigating Committee, and Gardner believes it would be wise if Roosevelt was summoned before the committee. Longworth notes he writes this for Gardner only and has no opinion on the matter himself. Additionally Longworth promises to show only Gardner, Roosevelt’s reply.

Letter from Nicholas Longworth to Theodore Roosevelt

Nicholas Longworth expresses to Theodore Roosevelt his concern over recent news that Roosevelt has accepted an invitation to dine with Robert J. Collier. He inquires if there is any foundation for the story, and explains that Collier “is the vilest muckraking sheet in the country,” having criticized both President Taft and Longworth himself.  Longworth also worries that a letter from Roosevelt has fallen into the hands of some publication, as he has not received it a week after it was sent.

Letter from Nicholas Longworth to Theodore Roosevelt

Representative Longworth updates President Roosevelt on election results from Ohio. Although initially it appeared that Republicans, especially Longworth himself, might lose, William H. Taft and Judson Harmon have both been elected. Longworth sees the result of an endorsement of Roosevelt’s policies. He believes that Roosevelt’s letter to Taft, and his recent letter on the labor question, clinched the campaign for Republicans.
