The conversation suggested by Harper between Roosevelt and George William Curtis never took place as Roosevelt did not return to New York by train. After a personal inquiry of Roosevelt and a review of letters from that time, Lodge knows that Roosevelt could not have said what was attributed to him in Harper’s book.
