Art Koch reveals the subject and context of the seventh “TR-era image” which shows rows of small tents arrayed on the San Juan Heights of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Koch asks readers to identify a figure who was mistakenly identified as Theodore Roosevelt in a photograph in an article in the Fall 2010 issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal.

Koch asks his readers to identify the subjects and context of image number nine which shows members of the Rough Riders in a line waiting their turn to shake Roosevelt’s hand.

Art Koch reveals the subject and context of the ninth “TR-era image” which shows Colonel Theodore Roosevelt shaking hands with members of his Rough Riders cavalry regiment at its mustering out of service on September 13, 1898. Frederic Remington’s bronze sculpture of “The Bronco-Buster” can be seen on a table near Roosevelt. The tenth TR-era image is a stereoscope view of a wrecked ship.

Art Koch reveals the subject and context of the seventh “TR-era image” which is of a transport ship docked in Tampa, Florida, with members of the Rough Riders onboard awaiting their voyage to Cuba during the Spanish-American War in June 1898. The seventh installment in the series, also an image from a stereoscope card, depicts row after row of pup tents.

Art Koch reveals the subjects and context of the second “TR-era image” which features Theodore Roosevelt with fellow hunters near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, in the spring of 1905. Koch notes that one of the subjects in the picture had her head erased by the photographer under direction of Roosevelt who was offended that she had intruded herself among his hunting companions. The third image features a cartoon of Roosevelt shooting at a dictionary with two revolvers while the ghosts of three famous writers hover over the dictionary.

Art Koch reveals the subject and context of the third “TR-era image” which is a political cartoon showing Theodore Roosevelt shooting holes in a dictionary with two revolvers. Koch reveals that this cartoon from September 1906 pokes fun at Roosevelt’s directive to the Government Printing Office to use a simplified form of spelling in government documents, and he lists some notable Americans who supported Roosevelt’s reforms. The fourth image in the series shows a typical street scene of storefronts, horse drawn wagons, and telephone poles.

Roosevelt went on a four minute flight in what is considered the first ride by a United States president on an airplane. Koch introduces the sixth image in the series which features a stereoscope card with a photograph of a ship tied up at a dock.

Photographs from the eighty-ninth annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association

Collection of thirty-two photographs from the 2008 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Oyster Bay, New York. Many of the photographs are close-ups of the various TRA leaders, speakers, guests or dignitaries at the assorted events.  Only two of the figures are identified in captions. Two pages of photographs are devoted to a parade in Oyster Bay; one page to the TRA’s annual dinner; one page to events at Sagamore Hill; and one page to ceremonies at Theodore Roosevelt’s grave at Youngs Memorial Cemetery.
