Puerto Rico Governor Hunt updates President Roosevelt on the general elections that were held yesterday in Puerto Rico. People were “intensely” interested, and the day went well. Federico Degetau y González was re-elected as Resident Commissioner.

Puerto Rico Governor Hunt informs George B. Cortelyou that Santiago Iglesias Pantín was attempting to leave the island to avoid trial after having failed to appear in criminal court three times. Iglesias Pantín is charged with conspiring to raise the price of labor, and one death has occurred in riots attributed to his agitation. Hunt will ask for his bail to be reduced, but notes that the court is reluctant due to Iglesias Pantín’s dangerous character and bad record.

Judge Hunt of the United States Commerce Court tells United States Marshal Merrifield that he will try to find out what the situation is with Charles S. Henderson potentially replacing him as United States Marshal. Senator Thomas Henry Carter recommended Henderson, but Senator Joseph M. Dixon may now have control of the nomination process. Hunt reassures Merrifield that, “whatever comes, you have the satisfaction of feeling that your period of service has been one of the highest credit to yourself, and of usefulness of the public.” Hunt thanks Merrifield for the telegram he sent relating to the Bliss case. He comments that he was gratified that all three judges of the appellate tribunal felt that he made the correct ruling.

On behalf of J. H. Durston, William Henry Hunt asks Theodore Roosevelt to deliver an address in Bozeman, Montana, this spring. Hunt adds that he is very interested in Senator Elihu Root’s opinion on the direct election of senators.

Judge William Henry Hunt sends William Loeb papers related to the application for the pardon of several men, as well as a history of the case they were involved in. Hunt tells Loeb that the conviction of these men has produced a great deal of bitterness in Montana, and that he has been warned to take measures to protect himself, but he is not worried.

Judge Hunt tells Secretary of War Taft the story of how he encouraged a grand jury to “inquire diligently into the instances of enclosures on public lands.” After indictments were delivered, a foreman of the court asked to be excused. The former foreman was indicted for fencing in land. Hunt commends the jury for their action and claims this is an “index of the healthier situation that exists in Montana.”

Governor Hunt informs President Roosevelt about the plans for the arrival and inauguration of the next governor of Puerto Rico, Beekman Winthrop. After the inauguration Hunt will travel to New York and requests to see Roosevelt in Oyster Bay if possible. He has heard that Roosevelt and Senator Fairbanks received the nominations for president and vice-president and regrets that he will not be able to help on the campaign.

However, Hunt claims that statistics will come out shortly to refute this premise. Hunt also encloses a copy of the Democrat’s adopted platform.
