John A. Herman writes Theodore Roosevelt in response to reading Roosevelt’s introduction to H. J. Mozans book Along the Andes and Down the Amazon (Following the Conquistadores). Herman has travelled in South and Central America in a parallel journey to Mozans. Not all men agree with Mozans’s conclusions, so Herman appreciates Roosevelt’s approval.

John A. Herman read an article in the New York Times where the artist, Howard Chandler Christy, said that Theodore Roosevelt was not present at the Battle of San Juan Hill. Herman stated publicly in an oration that was later published that Roosevelt participated in the charge there. Roosevelt’s book The Rough Riders seems to suggest he was. He asks Roosevelt if he misunderstood the book.

John A. Herman is a graduate of Princeton University and has practiced law for over twenty-five years. Although his knowledge of Spanish is rusty, he believes he could quickly revive it. As Senator Knox may know, Herman’s relatives were soldiers, but lameness from a childhood accident prevented him from following suit. He vows to faithfully administer the duties of any office given him.

Letter from John A. Herman to William Loeb

John A. Herman informs William Loeb that he has received a letter from Senator Philander C. Knox indicating he would recommend Herman for a position to President Roosevelt. Herman and Knox agree that Herman’s experience as an attorney and knowledge of Spanish means he would be well suited to a diplomatic or judicial post in one of the Spanish speaking territories.
