John A. Gable introduces three authors and their articles on Gifford Pinchot which make up most of this issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. Gable notes that all three articles were originally presented as papers at the Rose Hill Seminar at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, on June 6, 1987. Gable provides a brief history of the Rose Hill Seminars along with brief biographical statements for each of the authors.

John A. Gable provides a detailed report on the opening of the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands on September 19-20, 1986. Gable discusses the inaugural symposium held at the Center, listing the speakers and their topics, and he examines the genealogy of the Roosevelt family, looking at its roots in the Netherlands and the split of the family into the Hyde Park and Oyster Bay, New York, branches. Gable also touches on the purpose of the Center, to provide a European home for the study of American history, and he notes the various resources available to students and scholars. Gable also lists the members of the Roosevelt family and the Theodore Roosevelt Association who attended the opening and are involved in the Center’s administration.

Ten photographs supplement the text; seven show people at the opening of the reception with an emphasis on members of the Dutch government, and three show the exterior of the Center’s building, the Middelburg Abbey.

In a eulogy for Peter R. Fisher, John A. Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), examines Fisher’s commitment to the preservation of the history of the Town of Oyster Bay, New York, and the greater Long Island area. Though Fisher belonged to a dozen historical organizations, Gable highlights his work on behalf of the Oyster Bay Historical Society, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, and the TRA.

John A. Gable explores the two Theodore Roosevelts, the mythic “Teddy Roosevelt” and the real Roosevelt. Gable says that there are three kinds of mythic Roosevelts: the Boy Scout, the American Mussolini, and the Teddy Brewster which represent the inspirational leader, the macho imperialist, and the cartoonish buffoon. Gable examines the real Roosevelt by looking at his many accomplishments as president in conservation and foreign affairs and by highlighting his intellectual life, especially his numerous books and essays. He argues that Roosevelt sought to achieve Jeffersonian goals of democracy through Hamiltonian means, and he asserts that both liberals and conservatives can find things to embrace in Roosevelt’s record.

Gable notes that Yeager, a famous test pilot, broke yet another record with his flight from California to New York to attend the awards dinner. Gable lists those from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) who organized and ran the ceremony, and he summarizes the remarks of the speakers. The article also includes a congratulatory letter from President Ronald Reagan and a listing of some of the guests. A listing of the officers of the TRA along with the members of its executive committee is included in the article.

Gable discusses the foreign policy issues faced by Roosevelt, and he notes the marked policy differences between Roosevelt and Reagan. He closes with a look at how presidents have fared in trying to win a second term.
