Basil Wilson Dukes has heard from Leslie Combs that the political scene with Mexico may result in war. Combs explained that Theodore Roosevelt might recruit a regiment of calvary were this to occur, and Dukes requests that Roosevelt consider using the regiment from Kentucky. The “Kentucky Boys” were some of the best during the Civil War, and would be honored to be of use were war to begin.

Basil Wilson Duke is disappointed that William O’Connell Bradley and John Watson Yerkes could not come to an agreement regarding Republican Party leadership in Kentucky. There is little chance of Republican success in Kentucky until they can “act more harmoniously.” However, Duke is still confident that a Roosevelt delegation can be sent from Kentucky.

Basil Wilson Duke has spoken to Augustus Everett Willson regarding President Roosevelt’s desire to meet with them. Duke and Willson have business dealings to attend to at the beginning of the month and want to conclude their efforts at securing an understanding among the Republicans of Kentucky before seeing Roosevelt. Duke will write to Roosevelt before they leave for Washington, D.C.
