Wallace Finley Dailey presents an exhibit, “Roosevelt Reading: The Pigskin Library, 1909-1910,” that opened at Harvard University in September 2003. Dailey provides an introduction to the exhibit which consists of photographs, excerpts of letters, and illustrations of the numerous pigskin bound volumes that Theodore Roosevelt took with him on his African safari. The exhibit is divided into three parts: “Classics and the Continent,” History and Romance,” and “Americans.” Many of the book illustrations have captions taken from letters or articles written by Roosevelt that comment on the book and its author.

The Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard: A sixty-ninth anniversary report and farewell curatorial summary

Wallace Finley Dailey provides a history of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection housed in the Harvard University libraries, and he highlights the interaction between the staff at Harvard and the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). Dailey lists both recent works on Theodore Roosevelt that have made use of the collection and some of the acquisitions made to grow the collection. Dailey also writes at length about the continuing efforts to make the collection searchable and usable through an online catalog, and he notes collaborative projects with Google and the Theodore Roosevelt Center to scan items from the collection. Dailey also gives an update on his work, including assisting researchers and mounting exhibits, since his last report in 2008.

Wallace Finley Dailey, curator of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, recreates an exhibit on Theodore Roosevelt’s involvement with Harvard from his days as a student to his work as an overseer. The exhibit was displayed at Harvard in 1977, 1980, 1996, 2005, and 2012. The exhibit in article form consists of twenty-five photographs, including thirteen of Roosevelt, and numerous documents including letters, certificates, diary and notebook entries, and publications by and about Roosevelt. The accompanying text identifies each photograph and document, noting its source and providing context.

The Theodore Roosevelt sesquicentennial at Harvard University

Wallace Finley Dailey describes the October 3, 2008, presentation given by documentary filmmaker Ken Burns during a visit to Harvard University as part of its commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt’s birth. Dailey also details a major photography exhibit chronicling Roosevelt’s life drawn from some 200 photographs from the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard. Dailey provides details about the photographs to be found in the five areas of the exhibit.

Three photographs accompany the essay, including ones of Dailey and Burns, along with a picture of the exhibit cases, and an illustration of Sagamore Hill.

The Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard: A Sixtieth-Anniversary Report

Wallace Finley Dailey describes the changes and additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University since his last report in 1994. Dailey notes the repair and restoration of thousands of pamphlets, the addition of manuscripts from Roosevelt family members, and the addition of books and articles whose authors made use of the collection in writing their works. Dailey also describes the process of moving the collection’s guides online, and he highlights the various exhibits mounted by Harvard Library using material from the collection. He closes the report by noting that the collection received Theodore Roosevelt’s Pigskin Library, and that it served as the centerpiece of an exhibit.

A photograph of the Pigskin Library appears on the first page of the report, and a text box with a quote from Roosevelt about reading appears at its end.

Wallace Finley Dailey, curator of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard, presents a thorough bibliographic list of journal and magazine articles published since 1950 which have featured Theodore Roosevelt. The list is split into thirty-two categories, and is meant to be used as a supplement to Harvard University Library’s Theodore Roosevelt Collection: Dictionary Catalog and Shelflist.

Four photographs and one illustration of Roosevelt reading accompany the bibliography.

The Theodore Roosvelt Gallery at Harvard

Wallace Finley Dailey, Curator of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, describes in detail two exhibits of Theodore Roosevelt material on display in the Theodore Roosevelt Gallery in the Nathan Marsh Pusey Library in 1977. One exhibit covers Roosevelt’s long relationship with Harvard University from his undergraduate student years to his death. The other explores Roosevelt’s relationship with his daughter Ethel Roosevelt Derby. In both exhibit summaries, Dailey quotes extensively from Roosevelt’s letters and speeches and provides descriptions of the photographs used in the exhibits. 

 

Three photographs and one illustration accompany the article. One photograph shows Dailey examining the exhibit display cases. Another shows Roosevelt with a group of his Harvard classmates, and one shows Derby at the White House in 1902. The illustration is a drawing by Roosevelt’s classmate, Charles G. Washburn, that depicts a monument detailing Roosevelt’s many activities at Harvard.

T. R Collection at Harvard: A Report

Wallace Finley Dailey provides a brief history of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, noting the collection’s beginnings as an effort of the Roosevelt Memorial Association and initially housed at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace in New York City. He highlights those who have cared for the collection as well as historians who have made use of its resources in their published works. Harvard is currently constructing a new library on its campus, which will allow the collection to be housed in a modern setting.
