The big stick again

In the first section, Russian Emperor Nicholas II and Japanese Emperor Meiji come to President Roosevelt, saying, “We cannot agree on peace terms. Roosevelt responds, “What?” In the second section, Roosevelt knocks their heads together and says, “Well—suppose you get together and try again—” In the third section, Nicholas II and Meiji have stars around their heads as they look as a paper that reads, “Russo-Japan Peace Terms.” Roosevelt stands in the doorway with his “big stick” and says, “—And I’ll give you just 15 minutes to sign those papers—”

Chairman of the Republican National Committee George B. Cortelyou rides a Republican elephant with Indiana Senator Charles W. Fairbanks that is about to land on a “nomination” pad. The elephant has just passed through a “Chicago convention” that President Roosevelt holds up. Speaker of the House Joseph Gurney Cannon looks on and cheers. William Jennings Bryan rides a Democratic donkey, holds a “St. Louis Convention” sign, and has a “16-2-1” feather in his hat.

They don’t like noise

President Roosevelt goes to light a “Post Office scandal” stick of dynamite as three men—New York Senator Thomas Collier Platt, Ohio Senator Marcus Alonzo Hanna, and Pennsylvania Senator Matthew Stanley Quay—tell him to stop. Meanwhile, “Miss Democracy” looks on while Ohio Senator Joseph Benson Foraker rides in on a fire wagon. Caption: Chorus from the doorway: “Don’t do it, Teddy! It is dangerous!”

President Roosevelt home again

President Roosevelt watches Uncle Sam hold a rifle pointed toward the rats–dishonest post office officials–going after the money bags in the “U. S. Post Office Department” crib. The White House is in the background. Caption: “Glad to see you, Teddy. Get your gun and we’ll clean out this crib.” A handwritten note is also included: “Teddy, call Jno. R. McLean & McBride as to lottery in Cin Enquirer. it will keep you busy.”

All ready, professor!

Black ink cartoon of President Roosevelt in his Rough Rider uniform and “Jedge Parker” on stage. Roosevelt bends over with his hat stretched out and both men hold a sheet of music. In front of the stage is a fat, bald man labeled “Wall Street” sitting and playing a piano, with his sheet music the same as the one being held by Roosevelt and Alton B. Parker. The text of the music reads “There will be no silver threads among the gold.”

I and my four sons are ready

Cartoon depicts Theodore Roosevelt dressed as a Rough Rider holding a horse labeled “American Legion” as he saluted the First Emergency Reserves. A typed note in the scrapbook says this cartoon is how the name American Legion came to be. Caption: An American Legion of 250,000 men, to act as a reserve army, is being formed. Colonel Roosevelt says he and his four sons will gladly join.
