John Graham Brooks relates to President Roosevelt a conversation he had at one of the recent meetings of Economic Clubs from all over the New England area. At the Portland, Maine, meeting, the leader of the Massachusetts socialists criticized Roosevelt and his policies. The gentleman claimed that Roosevelt was “embarrassing,” criticized his “new attitude on taxation and coal lands,” and added that the socialists hope a “safe man” becomes his successor.

Letter from John Graham Brooks to Theodore Roosevelt

John Graham Brooks thanks President Roosevelt for his letter on Alfred Holt Stone. He had already gotten letters about Stone’s Studies in the American Race Problem from Edwin Anderson Alderman, Walter Hines Page, and William Garrott Brown. Brooks also received another edition of Socialism & Individualism. He told Lawrence F. Abbott that it is the most powerful work he has seen in thirty years of reading socialist literature.

John Graham Brooks reports to Commissioner of Labor Wright about the labor dispute in Colorado. He discusses the history of conflict between labor unions and employers going back nearly ten years. Brooks describes the conflict from both the workers’ and employers’ perspectives. Brooks recommends that the government let it be known that he has investigated the dispute, but thinks there is little else that can be done to fix the situation.
