Letter from John Sutherland Bonnell to Eleanor Butler Roosevelt
John Sutherland Bonnell, pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, writes to Eleanor Butler Roosevelt, telling her there is no record of her marriage to Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. at the church on June 20, 1910. At the bottom, Roosevelt has written that she did not care for the pastor that was there at the time and her uncle, Charles Beatty Alexander, said there was no reason for him to perform the ceremony. The result was he made no record of the marriage.
