Memorandum from Howard W. Baker to Newton Bishop Drury

National Park Service Regional Director Baker forwards a report on the Maltese Cross cabin, written by Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park historian Ray H. Mattison. Baker also mentions the possible transfer of the cabin from the State of North Dakota to the park, noting that until an interpretive plan can be developed, the National Park Service should defer taking a position on this prospect.

Memorandum from Howard W. Baker to Allyn F. Hanks

Memorandum from Howard W. Baker to Allyn F. Hanks

Howard W. Baker summarizes the discussion he had with Ray H. Mattison concerning his report “Study of the Authenticity of the Maltese Cross Cabin.” Baker suggests breaking down the research program into several individual projects unless it is just one overall historical study. In that case, he suggests putting together several studies under one cover. Baker also suggests adding information to the report about the origin of the term “Maltese Cross” and why Theodore Roosevelt adopted it for his ranch. Baker would like the timbers used to build the cabin identified by a professional forester. He understands Russell Reid is already working towards this goal. Baker is also considering hiring an architect to do a measured drawing of the cabin to add to the report.

Report of field investigation of the Badlands and Killdeer Mountains, North Dakota by Regional Office Party

Report of field investigation of the Badlands and Killdeer Mountains, North Dakota by Regional Office Party

The report highlights the geological characteristics of the North Dakota Badlands and the Killdeer Mountains, which were proposed to be added to the national park. Included in the report is a copy of the field inspectors’ itinerary for their four day trip. In addition, Baker highlights the Elkhorn Ranch and petrified forest as important areas, and concludes that the badlands and Killdeer Mountains do not warrant status as a national monument unless a grasslands preserve was established first.
