Mike Thompson Collection

The Mike Thompson Theodore Roosevelt Postcard Collection was formed while Thompson worked on his book, The Travels and Tribulations of Theodore Roosevelt’s Cabin. He found the postcards in private collections, antique shops, and on eBay. Thompson believes that for a period of time the Roosevelt cabin was one of the major tourist attractions in North Dakota. His book gives a detailed account of the cabin.

A full color satirical postcard depicting President Roosevelt as a child riding a rocking horse and shooting two guns into the air while two small “Teddy” bears watch from behind a large stone. The caption on the bottom of the card reads: “I am leading a strenuous life.” The card was sent by Lee to Mrs. E. S. Skellinger regarding travel plans.

This two-tone, red and white postcard features the words “Delighted” in white on a red background across the front of the card. A cowboy hat appears at the top right and pince nez at the bottom left. The card was sent by Hattie to Florence Margaret O’Donell David and uses the word “delighted” to highlight Hattie’s request for a return correspondence: “Dear Girlie, would be DELIGHTED to hear from you again.”

A black and white photo postcard of “Roosevelt’s Cabin State Capitol Grounds.” Wallie writes, “This is a pretty nice little village, but the people most are broke, only sold 1 o’coat [overcoat?] here. Going to Miles City tonight to get over on the Milwaukee Road, west. May see you soon, and maybe not till spring, can’t say yet.” The postcard has the location of Bismarck, North Dakota, on the bottom right corner, front.

A black and white photo postcard of Roosevelt’s cabin sent by Rose Rittle to her sister: “Am over at Bismarck at a house party – from Friday until Sun. P.M. – at home of a teacher – visited Capitol, “Pen” [the State Penitentiary] and Fort Lincoln.” The postcard has the following text printed on the bottom: “Roosevelt Cabin Capitol Grounds,” “A Genuine Photo,” and “Bismarck, N. Dak.”
