Roosevelt, friend of the birds

Roosevelt, friend of the birds

A narrative of Theodore Roosevelt’s role in bird preservation which includes factual footage taken on his visit under the auspices of the National Audubon Society to bird sanctuary islands off the coast of Louisiana, June 1915. Mating habits and domestic life of snowy egrets and their plunder by hunters are dramatized. Scenes of egrets’ nests and the hunt, kill, and plucking of birds serve as the prologue to depiction of Roosevelt as bird preservationist. Views of Roosevelt and John Milliken Parker, leader of the Louisiana Progressive party, aboard the Audubon Society’s boat, the Royal Tern. Views of Roosevelt standing in marshes, with what is perhaps the Louisiana Conservation Commission yacht in background. Herbert Keightley Job, photographer for the expedition and noted ornithologist, appears on the beach with his camera. Roosevelt examines eggs and talks with other members of the expedition: a man who is probably J. Hippolyte Coquille, a local photographer; M. L. Alexander in light pants, president of the Louisiana Conservation Commission; Parker, with his back to camera; and game warden William Sprinkle. Additional scenes of Roosevelt exploring the island and observing birds along the beach, and views of a variety of shore birds including royal terns, black skimmers, laughing gulls, brown pelicans, blue herons, and egrets.

The River of Doubt

The River of Doubt

For this film, the Roosevelt Memorial Association compiled footage from Theodore Roosevelt’s 1913-1914 trip to South America during which he combined a series of lectures with an expedition in the Amazon Valley of Brazil to collect zoological specimens. The Roosevelt group was combined with a group of Brazilian scientists under the leadership of Colonel Rondon to explore the course of the uncharted Rio da Dúvida, the River of Doubt. In 1926, G. M. Dyott, an English explorer, was asked by the Roosevelt Memorial Association to retrace Roosevelt’s voyage down the River of Doubt and to film his trip in order to supplement the footage from the 1914 trip.

Theodore Roosevelt’s sons’ regiments during war, 1917-1918

Theodore Roosevelt’s sons’ regiments during war, 1917-1918

Soldiers walk in formation on a road accompanied by several mounted men. Judging by the soldiers’ heavy clothing, it must be winter. This group may be the 26th Infantry, Theodore and Archibald Roosevelt’s regiment. Following sequence is of biplanes flying in formation. Third sequence is shot at a hangar where men appear to be preparing a plane for flight. The second and third sequences may be of Quentin Roosevelt’s squadron, the 95th. The last sequence probably represents Kermit Roosevelt’s regiment, the 7th Field Artillery. In this sequence a group of men load and fire a cannon. Location undetermined; film, or portions of it, probably shot in France.
