Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Carl H. Eigenmann

Theodore Roosevelt regrets that he will not be able to help Carl H. Eigenmann have his monograph published. He has not even been able to publish the results of his own Smithsonian African expedition. Roosevelt is glad that Eigenmann appreciated his comments on J. D. Haseman’s work, which was strong but required “sharp attention” to its faults. Roosevelt appreciated Haseman’s statement that a genus’s current distribution provides only a remote indication of its place of origin and dispersal. He is not yet ready to accept the “theory of continental connections” to explain the distribution of vertebrate life.
