Lawrence F. Abbott asks President Roosevelt to review upcoming articles for the Outlook that celebrate the birthday of General Robert E. Lee. Abbott hopes Roosevelt will write something for the magazine on Lee and also discusses the seemingly new unity of the country based on northerners of abolitionist ancestry celebrating the Confederate general. Abbott also includes a handwritten postscript specifying the deadline if Roosevelt did wish to contribute materials.

Theodore Roosevelt informs his sister Anna Roosevelt Cowles that they are looking forward to meeting her husband William Sheffield Cowles. Roosevelt’s work as Police Commissioner is hopeless because he cannot accomplish any more. He feels William McKinley has begun his presidency well and likes the choice of John Hay over Chauncey Depew for Ambassador to Great Britain. His naval manuscript is complete.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to say how proud he is of all four of his sons and what they have achieved during the war. He wants to know if Kermit is over his attack of malarial fever. Roosevelt says Edmund Heller came for a visit and will be married soon. He adds he is sending Kermit the American Museum journal with an article he wrote containing pictures Kermit took.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit and daughter-in-law Belle to say the artillery training would be good for Kermit. Uncle Douglas Robinson’s funeral was touching and Archie Roosevelt will have his knee operated on again. Ted Roosevelt has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and Roosevelt is working on another book. Roosevelt says the letters people have been writing about Quentin Roosevelt are wonderful.

Theodore Roosevelt tells his son Kermit that Bridges wanted some articles from Kermit about his time in Mesopotamia. Roosevelt says it is his sixtieth birthday and he has a lot of happy memories to look back on. He lists several guests he has had the past few days and criticizes President Woodrow Wilson for accepting any type of peace just to end the war.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to tell him Ted Roosevelt’s wife Eleanor has arrived and told him Kermit’s battery was attached to Ted’s regiment. Roosevelt reviews all the action Kermit has seen in the war and tell him how proud he is of him. He adds that Archie Roosevelt has written a small book about his experiences in the first year of the war.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to criticize President Woodrow Wilson for a lack of military preparedness and reports a Congressional investigation has shown Secretary of War Newton D. Baker’s inefficiency. Roosevelt says he continues to write and make speeches in an effort to spur Wilson into taking more action.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit about letters he has received about him including one from Rudyard Kipling. He says he is over his disappointment about not being in the war and makes speeches about carrying it on to a triumphal conclusion. He reports National Guard troops are reporting to military camps. Roosevelt adds he is publishing a new book and is being paid to write for some periodicals.

Roosevelt says he is glad all his sons were able to go abroad and fight and that the military training camps suffer from a lack of preparation. He has been speaking, writing and spending time with Mother.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to tell him about all the development going on in Oyster Bay, New York, and rowing with Mother. He also discusses his libel suit against George Newett and all the money he has had to pay out this year. He mentions making money by his writing.

Theodore Roosevelt asks if Kermit is getting any of his letters. He describes how they spent Christmas and tells Kermit about some of the writing he is doing. He closes by saying he has no idea whether the Progressive Party has a future.

Theodore Roosevelt tells his son Kermit about what he is writing and reports that he is having trouble with his autobiography. He comments on the Progressive Party and says if President Woodrow Wilson does well and satisfies the Progressives, Roosevelt will not have to get involved in politics. Roosevelt gives updates on the family and the health of Mother.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit to say some of the dogs have killed neighbor dogs and then turned on one in their own pack. He also inquires as to how Kermit made out in his races and is happy to hear he was invited to hunt moose and caribou. Roosevelt says he is busy making speaking trips he loathes but enjoys his work for the Outlook.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to say he has received a letter from his friend Frederick Selous and he feels sorry for him being so unhappy. Roosevelt says that, unlike him, Selous cannot be happy just retiring to his home. He says that he is ready to send Kermit’s article “The sheep of the desert” to some publishers. Roosevelt gives updates on the family: Archie shot a crow, Quentin must have his tonsils out, and Ethel had Billy Appleton over.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to congratulate him on having his article “The sheep of the desert” published. He says if he has any success on his trip to New Brunswick to write about it and then it can be sent to Scribners or National Geographic Magazine. In his post-script, Roosevelt asks Kermit what he wants to do with prints from the negatives of the Africa trip that were sent by Scribners.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit about Ted dining at the Porcellian Club at Harvard in hopes it might help Archie get in, but he doubts it. He adds that Archie does not care and is doing very well at school. Roosevelt says he has been writing articles for the Metropolitan magazine advocating military preparedness and he is prepared to join a mounted rifleman division should the United States enter the War. He mentions getting old and entertaining a “lady-socialist” at dinner. Roosevelt adds that Ethel and Ted’s wife Eleanor are having a splendid time this year.
