Finds packers break the laws

Mary Eleanor O’Donnell reports on the conditions found among women strike-breakers in the stockyard plants of Chicago. She describes her experience working as a strike-breaker in the kitchen at Swift & Co.’s, noting the unsanitary environment and difficult working conditions. O’Donnell provides 15 facts she found from her investigation into the condition the strike-breakers housed in stock yard plants, including the violation of city laws, “the bringing of paupers and criminals to the city to fill the places of strikers,” the “distribution of impure, vile foodstuffs,” unsanitary conditions likely to spread disease, and the disregard of moral laws.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

President Roosevelt tells Senator Lodge that he is not worried about any discontent about George B. Cortelyou being chairman of the Republican National Committee, and he believes that he will manage the canvass without any problems. Remarking on the upcoming presidential election, Roosevelt says that if he wins, it will be because people believe he is straightforward, decent, and efficient. He agrees that there could be a problem with the labor situation, but they can not do much of anything about that now. He praises Lodge’s platform, and asks that he have a talk with Cortelyou.

Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Secretary of War Taft tells President Roosevelt about a report made by Gertrude Beeks recommending changes to labor conditions on the Panamanian isthmus. The commission has acted on some, but others it does not consider necessary, and Taft would like to get the opinions of some people familiar with practical conditions of laborers on the isthmus. He proposes appointing a Commission to visit the isthmus and evaluate conditions, and suggests several people who could be a part of it.

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Lodge responds to an earlier letter from President Roosevelt. Lodge comments that there is not much of a reason to include a comment on immigration in the platform as there is currently not a demand for it, and it may do more harm than good. Lodge also discusses some of the hearings that the Interstate Commerce Commission has held, and remarks that his only concern in the upcoming election is the reduction in force by the railroads.
