Theodore Roosevelt tells Herbert Ward that he must be proud of his gallant son. Roosevelt laments that it is a sad time for people like Ward, but it is also a time for heroism. Roosevelt believes there are worse things than facing death–“to lead the swinish life of a fatted hog, for instance.”
