George Judson King is quoted as having given a speech in which he related a story about Abraham Lincoln speaking regarding the initiative and referendum, predicting that eventually every state in the union will have those rights, leading to true government by the people. King is additionally quoted as relating conversations he had with Swiss politician Ludwig Forrer regarding why Switzerland adopted direct legislation.
