President Roosevelt has asked George Putnam to provide M. Colin with a “full explanation of the circumstances attending the translation of ‘American Ideals’ by M. Izoulet.” Roosevelt would appreciate it if Colin would allow Izoulet to do as he desires.

Charles Scribner’s Sons, publisher of Roosevelt’s book Oliver Cromwell, have a contract with Ferdinand Defrance to translate the book into French and must advise against signing another contract for a French translation until the status of the Defrance contract can be ascertained. Scribner’s has not heard from Defrance since December.

G. P. Putnam’s Sons has explained to Louis N. Hammerling that they do not publish translations but will work with foreign language publishers to produce translations. Hammerling is seeking to translate some of President Roosevelt’s works into Polish and is responsible for finding a suitable Polish publisher.

There have been many requests to translate President Roosevelt’s books and the policy of Charles Scribner’s Sons has been to withhold translation rights unless a publisher has been secured. The request from Charles Carrington has been denied as Carrington has been “associated with some very shady books.”
