Gregory A. Wynn addresses the role that the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal (TRAJ) have played in shaping the historiography of Theodore Roosevelt. Wynn dwells on the work and contributions of John A. Gable, a long-time editor of the TRAJ in both fostering scholarship on Roosevelt and producing his own. Wynn highlights the work of Roosevelt biographers such as Edmund Morris, Kathleen Dalton, and Henry F. Pringle, and he identifies deficits in the study of Roosevelt that need to be addressed such as his presidency and his intellect.

Robert Wexelblatt describes his friendship with William N. Tilchin, the editor of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal (TRAJ). Wexelblatt explains how Tilchin made him into a Theodore Roosevelt expert by repeatedly asking him to review books about Roosevelt for the TRAJ. Wexelblatt writes that reviewing Philip James McFarland’s Mark Twain and the Colonel made him an enthusiast for Roosevelt while lowering his estimation of Mark Twain, and he admires Roosevelt for defeating the demon of depression.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) announces that it will soon publish a book, Spotlighting TR: Selections from the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, and it offers the book for sale at a discount to its members. The section contains the table of contents for the work. The TRA also announces the passing of Charles O. Bishop, a member of the Advisory Board of the TRA and the author of two books related to Theodore Roosevelt. Report on the 2014 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in New York City. The report covers the events of the weekend, highlighting the various authors and speakers in attendance, and it notes the conferring of four TRA awards, including the annual Bertha B. Rose Award and USS Theodore Roosevelt Junior Officer Leadership Award. The TRA also gave awards to documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and the former Superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Valerie Naylor.

Eleven color photographs accompany the text which is followed by a fourteen page album of eighty-four color photographs of the meeting venues, speakers, guests, and award winners.

The photographer Xiomáro describes the process of photographing Sagamore Hill National Historic Site while it was being emptied and prepared for a major renovation in 2012. Xiomáro recounts his experience photographing another unit of the National Park Service, and he notes how his photographs taken at Sagamore Hill became the basis for an exhibition in Oyster Bay, New York, and at Harvard University. One photograph accompanies the text which is followed by a photo album of eleven color photographs.

At the London book launch for A Companion to Theodore Roosevelt, Douglas Eden provides an overview of Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy, noting its main tenets and its achievements, and he highlights how Roosevelt’s policies came to influence his presidential successors. Eden also reviews the historiography of Roosevelt, demonstrating the renewed appreciation for Roosevelt since the low point of the 1930s. Eden asserts that A Companion to Theodore Roosevelt demonstrates that many scholars are now interested in studying Roosevelt, a marked change from when he began his work.

Report on the 2011 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Medora and Dickinson, North Dakota. Tweed Roosevelt examines five different types of books about Theodore Roosevelt, ranging from biographies to other works in which he plays only a marginal role, and Roosevelt cites several examples of each. Roosevelt also identifies four “really, really bad books” about Theodore Roosevelt, but he focuses on James Bradley’s The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War. Roosevelt details some of the shortcomings of Bradley’s book, including unnecessary numbers of footnotes, unsubstantiated claims against Theodore Roosevelt, and selective use of quotations. Roosevelt also considers how authors manage to publish and publicize such bad books, and he cites the unwillingness of reviewers to write negative reviews and the historical ignorance of those who interview the authors.

In an address to mark his election as Chair of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), Tweed Roosevelt lays out his plans for the association, and he acknowledges the contributions of several members of the TRA’s leadership who have assisted him and the TRA during a difficult period in the association’s history. Roosevelt announces that he will focus on retaining and recruiting members of the TRA and that he will use his background in finance to improve the TRA’s fiscal condition.

The announcement lists the eight scheduled speakers and highlights a tour of Tampa. Gregory A. Wynn discusses the origins of his hobby of collecting items related to Theodore Roosevelt, and he uses this as an introduction to examine a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Otto Trevelyan which had not been previously known or published. Wynn highlights the sensitive nature of the letter’s contents as it reveals Roosevelt’s thoughts and actions during a number of diplomatic crises during his presidency. Wynn also notes how the Trevelyan letter was shared with and was part of Roosevelt’s correspondence with his friend David Gray. Wynn asserts that the letters provide a “revealing snapshot of presidential statecraft.”
