Obituaries for Theodore R. Kupferman and Dorothy Horton McGee which examines their careers and community service, especially to the Theodore Roosevelt Association, which Kupferman headed as President and McGee served as a member of the Board of Trustees. Kupferman’s obituary highlights his brief political career, his tenure as a Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and his work with the Layman’s National Bible Committee. McGee is remembered as the Town Historian of Oyster Bay, New York, for her numerous books, and her love of sailing.

Variety defines this edition of “News & Notes.” The section highlights numerous ceremonies, celebrations, and exhibitions to mark the ongoing centennial observation of Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. It also covers the Fourth of July celebration in Oyster Bay, New York, the dedication of a plaque commemorating the attempt on Roosevelt’s life in October 1912 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the 50th anniversary of the opening of Sagamore Hill to the public. “News & Notes” also notes the death of Doris Albert Budner, the struggles of a Rough Rider museum in New Mexico, and the publication of an article by the Cato Institute that criticizes Roosevelt. 

 

The section contains three text boxes with quotations and excerpts from Roosevelt’s writings, and it is supplemented by four photographs, including two of humorist Mo Rocca at Sagamore Hill.

Report on the annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held on November 3, 2001 at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York City. The report covers the many sets of elections for officers and members of the advisory board and board of trustees for the TRA. The report highlights the election of Norman Parsons as the next President of the TRA, providing a brief biography of him, and it provides a synopsis of his address to the gathering. The nationwide tour of Theodore Roosevelt’s Medal of Honor, the status of the Pine Knot property, and the conferring of the TRA’s annual Junior Officer Leadership Award for the USS Theodore Roosevelt are also discussed.

 

Photographs of the most recent presidents of the TRA, Parsons and Lawrence H. Budner, supplement the report.

The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt appears as a subject in four of the six articles found in this edition of the “News & Notes” section. Paul B. Madden recalls his visit to the ship as a twelve year old; the carrier won a coveted award from the U.S. Navy; and GreenPoint Financial Corporation made a large donation to the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to support the ship. “News & Notes” also discusses the origins of Theodore Roosevelt’s use of the term “bully pulpit,” and it notes the 2001 winner of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize. 

 

An illustration of the carrier and a photograph of John A. Gable with members of Oregon’s congressional delegation and the Speaker of the House of Representatives appear in the section.

Medals, awards, and grants sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) constitute much of the “News & Notes” section. The honors include: the conferring of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to historian Stephen E. Ambrose; the 2002 TRA Police Award for the New Orleans, Louisiana, Police Department; the annual research grants given by the American Museum of Natural History; and the public speaking contests for New York City area schools. The section also highlights the Battle Efficiency Award won by the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt; the issuance of Theodore Roosevelt license plates by the state of New York; and a description of a fundraiser for the TRA’s Teddy Bear Fund, including a list of donors. The section concludes with the preface to Nathan Miller’s biography Theodore Roosevelt: A Life.

Photographs of Ambrose, a dinosaur exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History, and participants in the New York City speaking contest appear in the section.

Report on the joint history conference, “The Big Stick and the Square Deal: The Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt,” and annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Buffalo, New York, in October 2002. The report has three parts: a report on the conference and meeting; a full-page of thirteen photographs showing speakers, attendees, and dignitaries; and a full-page listing of patrons, supporters, and sponsors of the weekend’s events. The report highlights the conferring of the TRA’s Bertha B. Rose Award and its Distinguished Service Medal. The Rose Award was given to three members of Congress who helped secure Theodore Roosevelt’s Medal of Honor while the Distinguished Service Medal was given to the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt

This edition of “News and Notes” opens with news of the History Channel’s production of another documentary film about Theodore Roosevelt. The report provides some details about its production and highlights members of the Roosevelt family who have roles in the film. “News and Notes” highlights the journey of “Bully” the moose from Alaska to Colorado to the USS Theodore Roosevelt; the trophy mount was acquired by members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). A posthumous award for Roosevelt from the United States Navy Memorial Foundation and a conservation roundtable sponsored by the TRA receive attention as do a number of personnel changes at Roosevelt related historic sites like Sagamore Hill.

 

The section promotes the TRA’s website, its Theodore Roosevelt CD-ROM, and the association’s next annual meeting. Two photographs from the production of the History Channel documentary and a photograph of Bully the moose with the commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt appear in the section.

Hogan leads off the report, and the deaths of Roosevelt biographer Carleton Putnam and Mary E. Richard, Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary, are highlighted. The addition of a TRA Police Award for Nashville, Tennessee, the history of Youngs Memorial Cemetery, and publicity for the 1998 annual meeting also feature in the report. Report on the 78th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. The report details the field trips, dinner, speakers, and elections that marked the weekend meeting. The report highlights the reelection of Lawrence H. Budner as President of the TRA, the address of William N. Tilchin, and the conferring of the Junior Officer Leadership Award for the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Jesse Shapiro, winner of the TRA Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools, also addressed the dinner gathering.

The 76th Annual Meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) took place at Norfolk, Virginia, as well as onboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. The Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal was presented to former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman. The TRA also gave several gifts to the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, and held its meeting of the Board of Trustees. One prominent topic during the Board of Trustees meeting was about the future of Pine Knot–the Virginia cabin of Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt.

Other news items include the presentation of a number of Theodore Roosevelt-related awards, such as the TRA’s annual police awards, the appearance of Theodore Roosevelt on several television programs during 1995-1996, reports on several TRA-related activities like the annual teddy bear distribution, and an obituary of Dorothy R. Kidder. At the end of this section is a selection of several Theodore Roosevelt-related facts, including the names of the Secretaries of the Navy during Roosevelt’s presidency, and Roosevelt’s appointments to the Supreme Court.

In this citation for the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal, Perry D. Floyd cites a long list of John F. Lehman’s accomplishments as Secretary of the Navy during the Reagan administration which qualify him to receive the award. Lehman is especially noted for increasing efficiency in the Navy and strengthening the military capabilities of the branch. Lehman was also involved in the naming of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

“Dear Tom,” “Dear Theodore”: The letters of Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas B. Reed

“Dear Tom,” “Dear Theodore”: The letters of Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas B. Reed

R. Hal Williams examines the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas B. Reed, who twice served as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Williams notes that despite their different backgrounds, the two Republicans became good friends united by their love of books, the workings of politics, and the fortunes of the Republican party. Williams presents forty-one letters exchanged between the two from 1888 to 1902, and he provides annotations to the letters in 117 endnotes.

Two photographs of Reed and one of Roosevelt visiting Reed’s home in Maine appear in the article. The article also features two photographs of King Hussein of Jordan visiting the USS Theodore Roosevelt in 1995 as well as a list of the members of the executive committee of the Theodore Roosevelt Association.

The conferring of the annual Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) police awards for New York City, Boston, and Western New York state opens this edition of the “News and Notes” section. The accomplishments of each of the winners are detailed as are the ceremonies marking each award. A report on the TRA’s annual meeting and dinner follows with details of its speakers, field trips, and annual elections. The conferring of the TRA’s Junior Officer Leadership Award for a member of the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt is highlighted, and the section reprints an address by Edith Derby Williams given at the annual meeting.

Other news from the section includes the marking of twenty years as Executive Director of the TRA by John A. Gable; the awarding of the annual natural history research grants by the American Museum of Natural History; and the passing of TRA Trustee Oren Root. New York Governor George E. Pataki’s admiration for Theodore Roosevelt is noted as are the accomplishments of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. and his son, Quentin, on the fiftieth anniversary of the invasion of Normandy in World War II. “News and Notes” also trumpets recent works on Theodore Roosevelt by Caleb Carr, H.
