Judge Gary must now face steel inquisitors here

The Stanley Investigating Committee of the House—after hearing the testimony of Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the Executive Board of the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company—finds that there is much more to be discovered, and that they do not believe the whole story has been told yet. Gary will go under further examination, and it is expected that other high-profile figures will as well.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Callan O’Laughlin

Theodore Roosevelt is glad to hear from John Callan O’Laughlin. He believes the William Lorimer people will damage themselves if they insist on O’Laughlin’s subpoena. Roosevelt wanted Representative Augustus Owsley Stanley to know he had not been misled by the Steel Trust.

Letter from Edmond H. Madison to Theodore Roosevelt

Representative Madison describes Theodore Roosevelt’s testimony before the investigating committee regarding the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company acquisition as “bully.” However, he does not like the precedent of having ex-presidents testify before Senate investigative committees.

Letter from John Callan O’Laughlin to Theodore Roosevelt

John Callan O’Laughlin tells Theodore Roosevelt he is impressed with his handling of the “Stanley committee.” O’Laughlin reports that Arthur Krock stated the committee was impressed with Roosevelt and that Representative Augustus Owsley Stanley thought Roosevelt “had not been informed of the true situation.” O’Laughlin says he has not yet appeared in the William Lorimer case, and that William H. Taft is determined to use the veto. He also updates Roosevelt on Robert M. La Follette.

Letter from Arthur B. Farquhar to Theodore Roosevelt

Arthur B. Farquhar congratulates Theodore Roosevelt on his testimony before the Stanley Committee about the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company. As a businessman, Farquhar endorses Roosevelt’s statements, especially regarding attacks on corporations and trusts. He encloses James Rudolph Garfield’s speech at State College, which received tremendous applause when referring to Roosevelt.
