Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Cheng Liang

President Roosevelt thanks Cheng Liang for the letter and returns his compliments to Cixi, Empress Dowager of China. Roosevelt wishes that he could speak to Liang in person about China, but now understands the reasons he is not returning to the United States. However, he is encouraged by Liang’s letter, especially regarding schools and the lessening of opium traffic.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Endicott Peabody

President Roosevelt informs Endicott Peabody that Finley Peter Dunne plans to put his fifteen month old son, Finley P. Dunne, on the list for Groton School. Roosevelt hopes Peabody will give them a special advantage because they are “Chicago people” and therefore westerners, even though Dunne is currently living in New York. The president supports Peabody’s desire for Groton to be “the representative school of the country.”

Letter from S. M. Barrett to Theodore Roosevelt

S. M. Barrett is pleased by attempts in Oklahoma to enact educational reform and remove political influence from its schools. He sends Theodore Roosevelt an editorial he is free to quote from on the matter. Barrett also informs Roosevelt that he will be publishing a book on Native Americans soon, and plans to send Roosevelt a copy.

Sherman Day Thacher asks Lawrence F. Abbott to tell Theodore Roosevelt how delighted the Thacher School would be to have him and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt visit sometime, commenting that he does not write to Roosevelt directly, “because he must be overwhelmed with correspondence at this time.” Thacher also thanks Abbott for previously recommending he read James Anthony Froude’s Life and Letters of Erasmus, which he is greatly enjoying.

Letter from Martha Berry to Theodore Roosevelt

Martha Berry was pleased to visit Theodore and Edith Roosevelt at their home in Oyster Bay, and says that the children at her school were very interested in hearing about it. They remember Roosevelt’s visit to their school and the speech he gave there. If he has time, Berry would like Roosevelt to write an article about her school for The Outlook.
