Letter from William Emlen Roosevelt to Theodore Roosevelt

Emlen Roosevelt is handling the estate of their uncle, Cornelius Roosevelt. His primary difficulty is with a Mrs. Motley who may have been the mistress of their cousin, also named Cornelius Roosevelt, and who believes she is owed $25,000. It has become a legal battle and Emlen believes the claim should be fought even though Mrs. Motley has excellent lawyers. He intends to make the matter so expensive for her to pursue that she will drop the demand. Emlen attended the funeral of Robert Roosevelt’s wife and he was thankful for the flowers sent by President and Edith Roosevelt. Frank Greene’s financial affairs are in bad shape.

S. Grosvenor Porter was given a gun by Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt, President Roosevelt’s uncle, and he would like to gift the gun to Roosevelt. The gun is from the Paris Exposition of 1868.

Letter from Marie Mensing to Theodore Roosevelt

Marie Mensing reminisces about having known President Roosevelt and his family when he was a boy. She hopes Roosevelt will take action not only to punish President William McKinley’s assassin but also stop “the wholesale murders of rulers which has become so common of late years.” To Mensing, electrocution does not sufficiently punish the murder of a nation’s ruler, as that is the penalty for “ordinary murder.” She also expresses concern for the recent displacement of the American ambassador to Germany when the house he was living in was sold by the former owner. She urges Roosevelt to ensure that America owns property in the cities where the nation will be represented so the ambassadors are ensured of secure housing.
