Notable events include the deaths of Alice Lee Roosevelt and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, Roosevelt’s time on his ranch, the completion of Sagamore Hill, Roosevelt’s engagement and marriage to Edith Kermit Carow, Theodore “Ted” Roosevelt’s birth, the “Great-Dieup” of cattle in North Dakota, and the founding of the Boone and Crockett Club.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Roosevelt Cowles

Theodore Roosevelt is grieved to learn of George Cabot Lodge’s death. His worry over the sorrow Corinne Roosevelt Robinson continues to experience because of the loss of her son causes Roosevelt to reflect on how one should approach life and handle the grief that comes with the death of a loved one. Roosevelt notes that he is “on safari” as he writes this letter and will leave East Africa for Uganda and the Nile in mid-December.

President Roosevelt congratulates his son Kermit Roosevelt on his grades. Roosevelt is sorry for Archibald “Archie” B. Roosevelt, as he tries very hard, but his grades are not very good. He describes a walk he recently took with Fitzhugh Lee, John McIlhenny, and Cecil Andrew Lyon. Douglas Robinson and Corinne Roosevelt Robinson are currently visiting and having a nice time. They are disappointed that Stewart Douglas Robinson has been expelled from Harvard.

President Roosevelt asks U.S. Marshal Merrifield to write to Laura d’Oremieulx Roosevelt to tell her what steps her son, Oliver Roosevelt, should take to get out to a ranch in the coming year to do some hunting. He advises Merrifield that Roosevelt, being sixteen years of age, is small for his age and is not used to working outdoors, but is a fine musician.
