Cortelyou asks that Roosevelt accept the resignation and expresses his approval of Roberts’s work. He will send a recommendation for a successor separately.

Michael F. Moran chronicles the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s (TRA) Panama Canal Centennial Strenuous Life Adventure of March 2014. Moran describes the itinerary of the group, highlighting its passage through the canal on a cruise ship and its stop at various offices and sites associated with the construction of the canal. Moran also refers to figures prominent in the building of the canal such as John F. Stevens. Moran describes the condition of Colon, Panama, highlights the group’s bird watching expedition, and notes the costumes of the native Embera Indians.

Senator Hanna apologizes for the delay in replying to President Roosevelt’s letter. Hanna has been traveling and he wanted to meet with labor leaders before responding to the president. Hanna discusses the printers and pressmen’s organization as well as William Randolph Hearst’s aspirations to candidacy for president. Hanna then talks about the notion of socialism in conjunction with the Democratic Party.

The Iowa Republican state convention is having problems maintaining party unity. Governor Cummins is trying to maintain control over the convention, and has spoken against William P. Hepburn remaining as permanent chairman of the convention. Cummins is trying to show that he has not abandoned the “Iowa idea,” and will likely write the platform, or at least the part related to tariffs. The governor’s opponents have dug up an old letter from Cummins in which he supports free silver, rather than the gold standard.
