Theodore Roosevelt at the Library of Congress

Michelle A. Krowl of the Library of Congress presents twenty items from the library’s Theodore Roosevelt Collection. The material, consisting of twelve letters, four other documents, three political cartoons, and a campaign poster, encompass the years 1884 to 1934. Twelve of the documents were penned by Roosevelt, and Krowl provides context and background for each item while including quotes from the document in her description. The twenty items are preceded by a short introductory essay by Krowl which includes two photographs of the Library of Congress.

President Roosevelt believes it is unwise to give an interview to the newspaper. He agrees with William H. Taft’s opinion of the speeches given by J. S. Sherman and Secretary of State Elihu Root. Although he does not care for him, Roosevelt feels Governor Charles Evans Hughes should be renominated. Roosevelt wants Taft to show his personality and offers words of encouragement.

Judge Lindsey asks that President Roosevelt read the enclosed article written by former Denver District Court Judge Thomas B. Stuart on Big Bill Haywood’s trial. Lindsey describes the situation between himself and Governor Henry Augustus Buchtel and clarifies his statements regarding Senator Simon Guggenheim. Based on his knowledge of those involved, Lindsey feels that the Republican Party in Colorado is controlled by corporate interests and is largely against Roosevelt’s policies. In response, Lindsey asks if he can send Roosevelt a political pamphlet on the topic, and if they could meet in person in November to discuss matters.

Elisabeth D. Nielson Riis sends President Roosevelt a letter from Ambassador Laurits Swenson to her husband, Jacob Riis, regarding the possibility of Swenson having to leave his post in Denmark. Riis hopes Roosevelt will allow Swenson to stay and outlines his positive qualities. She notes that Prince Carl of Denmark spoke highly of Swenson and King Christian IX is fond of him as well. However, Riis is sure that whatever Roosevelt decides to do, it will be for a good purpose.
