While it would not be appropriate to publish letters sent during Roosevelt’s presidency, she would appreciate any he can share from his time as Governor of New York and Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Hay agrees to return the letters if desired and offers to send Roosevelt the letters he wrote to her husband since he became President.

Washburn wrote his book, Theodore Roosevelt: The Logic of his Career, while Roosevelt had lost popularity and that only friendship could have made Washburn write the book.
