Bryan and Chief Deputy Steele are corresponding with Senator Hanna in an effort to ensure that Bryan or Steele are appointed United States Marshal for the Middle District of Alabama.  Bryan supposedly offered his support for Hanna’s presidential nomination in 1906.

William C. LeGendre read an article by William Nivison Wilmer about potential presidential candidates and he concluded in favor of President Roosevelt’s candidacy. However, Wilmer had issues with the pension question and LeGendre suggested to him that Roosevelt’s record shows that he would be capable of starting an investigation of the pension issue.

Telegram from Booker T. Washington to Emmett J. Scott

Booker T. Washington reports what he knows about a certain person and his political convictions. He notes that the party voted for John M. Palmer and Simon Bolivar Buckner of the National Democratic Party in 1896, but entered the Democratic primaries in 1900 to help defeat the nomination of William Jennings Bryan. Washington suggests their friends be advised to appoint a Montgomery man to represent the “best class of white people” and to appoint William Demos Crum as internal revenue collector for South Carolina, representing the “best class of colored.”

Robert Chisolm is concerned about the state of the Republican Party in the South and believes that President Roosevelt can improve the situation. However, Chisolm has heard that Roosevelt is considering not being a presidential candidate after he has completed William McKinley’s term. Such a decision is too early. Roosevelt can help matters in the South and should only appoint Republicans to government positions.

Richard Wainwright wishes that President Roosevelt had been permitted to wait and be elected president in 1904, but he is pleased that the public can grieve for William McKinley while not fearing the future. Wainwright is appalled when he thinks of his efforts to persuade Roosevelt to stay with the navy as Roosevelt has been able to accomplish so much.

General Funston thanks Vice President Roosevelt for the congratulatory letter upon Funston’s commission as a brigadier general. He regrets that his military service will prevent him from “whooping it up” for a Roosevelt presidential campaign in 1904. Funston reports that the situation in the Philippines is difficult and he wishes the army could use an “iron hand.” He has a low opinion of Filipinos and does not believe they are currently suitable for self government.

J. S. Foster extends his sympathy to Vice President Roosevelt after hearing of Alice and Quentin Roosevelt’s illnesses. He is a supporter of Roosevelt and believes Roosevelt will be the next president. Foster hopes to become the postmaster of Fort Worth, Texas, and requests that Roosevelt speak with President McKinley on his behalf.
